Tattoo Aftercare: How to Properly Use Second Skin for Healing

At our tattoo studio, we want to ensure your tattoo heals properly and looks its best for years to come. One of the most effective healing methods we recommend is using second skin. However, we often hear clients receiving conflicting advice about how long to keep it on, when to change it, and whether it needs replacing.

To clear up any confusion, here’s our professional guide on how to use second skin correctly for tattoo healing.

What Is Second Skin and Why Use It?

Second skin is a transparent adhesive film that acts as a protective barrier over a fresh tattoo. It helps to shield the area from bacteria, reduces the risk of infection, and locks in your body’s natural healing fluids, which can speed up recovery.

When used correctly, second skin can often reduce the traditional two-week healing time to just seven days while minimising scabbing and irritation.

When to Apply Second Skin

We apply second skin at the end of your tattoo session, usually within 30 to 45 minutes after finishing. This protects the tattoo from external contaminants while allowing the skin to begin healing naturally.

The first layer of second skin should be worn for up to 24 hours. During this time, fluid build-up beneath the bandage is completely normal. Plasma, blood, and excess ink may collect under the film, giving it a cloudy or dark appearance.

When and How to Remove the First Layer

After 24 hours, remove the first sheet of second skin carefully:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the tattoo.

  2. Gently peel off the film—start from the edge and pull it back slowly. If it feels too sticky or uncomfortable, removing it in a warm shower can help loosen the adhesive.

  3. Wash the tattoo with mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap. Avoid scrubbing—use clean hands to gently cleanse the area.

  4. Pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel or allow it to air dry completely before applying a new layer of second skin.

How Long to Keep Second Skin On

Once the first layer is removed and the tattoo is clean and dry, you can apply a second sheet.

  • This second application can be worn for up to six days, provided there is no excessive fluid build-up underneath.

  • If the tattoo continues to release plasma (which is more common with colour tattoos or tattoos on the legs and feet), another replacement may be necessary within the next 24 hours. In this case, a third sheet can be applied and worn for up to five more days.

  • Second skin should never be worn for more than seven days in total, as prolonged use can cause irritation.

Why Change the First Layer After 24 Hours?

The plasma inside the first layer is essential for healing in the first 24 hours, but after that, it starts to break down. If left on for too long, it can cause irritation, increase the risk of infection, and even produce an unpleasant smell.

Changing the bandage at the 24-hour mark prevents these issues while still allowing second skin to protect the tattoo during the crucial healing stage.

When Can You Leave It on for the Full Seven Days?

In some cases, second skin may stay fully adhered to the tattoo with no fluid build-up underneath. If this happens, it may be possible to leave it on for the full seven days without needing replacement. However, this is rare and depends on how much plasma the tattoo releases.

If in doubt, it’s always best to follow the standard advice and change the bandage after 24 hours.

Final Aftercare Tips

  • Avoid soaking your tattoo—no baths, swimming pools, or saunas while using second skin. Showers are fine, but avoid direct water pressure on the tattoo.

  • If the second skin starts to peel off early, trim the loose edges rather than pulling the whole sheet off.

  • Once you remove the second skin for good, apply a thin layer of fragrance-free tattoo aftercare cream to keep the skin hydrated.

By following these steps, you’ll help your tattoo heal quickly, reduce irritation, and ensure the best long-term results. If you have any concerns during the healing process, feel free to get in touch—we’re always here to help!
